VALORANT Haven retake guide for Patch 13.02
This VALORANT Haven retake guide explains save decisions, regroup paths, utility order and site-specific clearing for coordinated teams on Patch 13.02.
Haven’s three sites punish defenders who rotate without a regroup plan. This VALORANT Haven retake guide is updated for Patch 13.02 and focuses on decisions a coordinated team can repeat.
Decide retake or save immediately
Count alive players, ultimates, available utility and the economy for the next round. A three-versus-three with two entry tools is playable; a two-versus-four with no flash and expensive rifles may not be. Make the call before attackers establish every post-plant angle.
Players already trapped near site should either preserve a safe pocket or die creating actionable damage. Surviving alone in an impossible corner delays the regroup without improving the retake.
A site: combine heaven and CT
A retake from only heaven is easy to stall. Pair heaven pressure with CT or short access so attackers must turn between elevations. Clear close boxes before exposing to long, then use a flash or recon tool to contest default plant positions.
Do not drop from heaven merely because the spike is ticking. Utility first, trade spacing second, descent third. One player should remain able to cover the defuser after the initial fights.
B site: isolate the open plant
B has limited hard cover, but attackers can hold from garage, A link and mid. Smoke one long lane and clear another together. The first defender creates contact; the second is close enough to trade rather than watching from the doorway.
If the spike is planted for mid, contesting that sightline is part of the defuse plan. A smoke on the spike can help, but spam and damage utility remain threats. Tap only when teammates are ready to punish the response.
C site: control garage and long
C retakes fail when defenders enter through CT one at a time. A garage player changes the geometry by threatening platform and back site. Coordinate the contact so long and garage pressure arrive within the same few seconds.
Clear close left, logs and platform in a fixed order. Save a displacement tool for common post-plant cover instead of using every ability at the choke.
Utility order matters
Information comes first, displacement second and flashes immediately before the swing. Overlapping two reconnaissance abilities wastes duration; throwing a flash before teammates reach the door gives attackers time to reset.
State each tool in comms: “drone back site,” “smoke long,” “flash in three.” Short calls prevent duplicate utility and make the entry timing visible to everyone.
Practice the final ten seconds
Use custom games or Retake to rehearse defuse protection. One player sticks only when another can cover the likely spam line. Know which abilities can deny a defuse and track whether they were used earlier in the round.

Retake checklist
- Call save or retake before the team fragments.
- Approach from at least two connected lanes.
- Use information before flashes and displacement.
- Clear the same close positions in the same order.
- Assign a defuser and a cover player.
Updated for: VALORANT Patch 13.02.
Track post-plant ultimates
Before entering, name enemy ultimates that can delay the defuse or force players away from the spike. The counter may be to start earlier, split wider or bait the ultimate with a tap. Discovering the threat only after the half-defuse sound wastes the most valuable seconds.
Your own ultimate should solve a defined problem. Use it to reveal back site, remove a long angle or create a safe path. Combining two round-winning ultimates on the same already-cleared corner reduces the team’s chance in the next round.
Adapt by agent role
Initiators lead the information sequence, controllers remove long sightlines and duelists convert the first flash into space. Sentinels on retake should use remaining utility proactively; a trap saved for a flank has little value if the spike explodes first.
These are responsibilities, not a fixed entry order. A low-health controller may carry the only smoke and should cast it before becoming the first contact. State who has the critical tool and protect that timing.
Handle incomplete information
A silent angle is not clear. If the clock prevents checking every position, smoke or damage the most dangerous lane and accept a calculated risk elsewhere. The team should share the same assumption so crosshairs cover different threats.
After a successful retake, note where attackers survived longest. The next defensive setup can preserve utility for that position, but avoid overfitting to one opponent’s post-plant habit.
Custom-game drill
Place three defenders outside a site and two attackers in common post-plant positions. Give the defenders one information ability, one smoke and one flash. Repeat until the first contact and trade occur together, then change the plant and attacker locations.
Finish by running the same drill without voice communication, then restore comms. The comparison exposes vague calls and makes the value of exact utility timing obvious.
