Samsung Galaxy sweep SKT to win Worlds 2017

Samsung Galaxy defeated SK Telecom T1 3–0 in the 2017 World Championship final at Beijing National Stadium on November 4. The result ended SKT’s attempt to win a third consecutive world title.

Road to the final

Samsung finished second in its group, then swept Longzhu Gaming and defeated Team WE 3–1. SKT survived two five-game series against Misfits and Royal Never Give Up, with Faker repeatedly carrying difficult positions. The final was also a rematch of Worlds 2016, when SKT beat Samsung 3–2 in Los Angeles.

Samsung controlled game one through scaling and objective play, then won a far tighter second game after resisting SKT’s attempts to accelerate. Game three produced the defining finish. Samsung removed the chaos that had allowed SKT to escape earlier series. Crown absorbed the mid-lane assignment, Ambition connected lanes through measured jungle routes and CoreJJ supplied engage or protection when required. Ruler did not need to force every fight; the decisive flash worked because vision, positioning and follow-up were already prepared.

Why the result still matters

The final marked Samsung’s second world championship lineage after the organisation’s 2014 victory and gave Ambition a title after his transition from mid lane to jungle.
